What do you need to import goods into South Africa?

Two things in most cases. First, your business must be registered as an importer — with ITAC, and with SARS for a customs client number. Second, if the goods you want to bring in are controlled, you need an import permit from ITAC for those specific goods before they ship.

What is an import permit?

An import permit is written permission from ITAC to bring a specific kind of goods into South Africa, usually for a set quantity and period. It is not the same as being registered as an importer. Registration is the general right to trade; a permit covers controlled goods.

Which goods need an import permit?

Import control applies to a defined list of goods rather than to everything. It commonly covers used and second-hand goods, scrap metal and waste, second-hand vehicles and machinery, certain chemicals, and some agricultural products. Can you import without registering?

No. Customs will not clear commercial consignments for a business that is not properly registered, and goods can be detained at the port at your cost. It is far cheaper to register first than to sort it out while a container sits in Durban.

What does it cost to get registered as an importer?

Dynamic Legal charges a fixed professional fee of R18 500 for ITAC registration. Import permits for controlled goods are quoted separately, once we know what you are importing.
