What is ITAC?

ITAC is the International Trade Administration Commission of South Africa. It administers the country's trade rules, including who may import and export goods and which goods need a permit.

Do I need ITAC registration to import or export?

Yes. If you intend to bring goods into South Africa or send goods out for business purposes, your business must be registered. Trading without it puts your consignments at risk of being detained.

How much do you charge?

A fixed professional fee of R18 500 for an ITAC importer or exporter registration. Permits for controlled goods are quoted separately.

What is the difference between ITAC registration and a SARS customs code?

The SARS customs client number is what customs uses to clear your goods. ITAC registration is the trade authorisation. Most traders need both, and we tell you which one you are still missing.

Do I need a permit as well as registration?

Accepted Answer

Only if your goods are controlled. That commonly includes used goods, scrap metal and waste, second-hand vehicles and machinery, and certain agricultural and chemical products. Send us a description and we will confirm.

How long does it take?

ITAC sets the turnaround. The most common cause of delay is a file lodged with missing documents, so we check everything before it goes in and follow up with ITAC on your behalf.

Do I need a registered company?

Not always — individuals can register in certain cases — but most traders apply as a company or close corporation. If you do not have a registered business yet, tell us in the application and we will guide you.

Yes. The whole process is handled online and by email, so it works the same wherever you are in South Africa.
