Exporting goods from South Africa
Exporters must be registered with ITAC, and controlled goods need an export permit as well. We prepare and lodge your registration for a fixed fee of R18 500.
What do you need to export goods from South Africa?
Your business must be registered as an exporter with ITAC and have a SARS customs client number. If the goods you want to send out are controlled, you also need an export permit from ITAC before the shipment leaves.
What is an export permit?
An export permit is ITAC's written approval to send a specific kind of goods out of South Africa, usually limited to a quantity and a period. Being registered as an exporter is not enough on its own where the goods are under export control.
Which goods need an export permit?
Export control covers a defined list rather than everything. It commonly includes scrap metal and waste, certain minerals and metals, used goods and used vehicles, and some agricultural and strategic products. Send us the description of your goods and we will confirm whether a permit is required.
What happens if you export without the right approvals?
Shipments can be stopped and detained by customs, and penalties can follow. Getting registered properly before you commit to an order protects both your cash and your relationship with the buyer.
What does exporter registration cost?
Our fixed professional fee for an ITAC registration is R18 500. Export permits for controlled goods are quoted separately once we know what you are shipping.
